While International Women’s Day is officially on March 8, I’ll be joining General Assembly (Denver) to specifically celebrate women in technology on Friday, March 12, 10-11am MTN (online).

One question on my mind GOING INTO THE CONVERSATION: are women empowering each other equally and equitably?

We can talk equal opportunity all day - such as having access to the same roles, salary, review and promotion cycles. But equity, that recognizes the context required to actually allow someone to take advantage of the opportunity in the same way. 

Gender, ethnic, mental health, ability and other biases have created set-backs that are often invisible and psychologically insidious. In addition, our addiction to busy, efficiency and the bottom line have asked us to leave some of the most special parts of us at home and ignore other parts of ourselves (like emotions) all together. No wonder we experience anxiety, depression, imposter syndrome, lack of confidence and major bouts of “stuck;” we aren’t being real! 

Ultimately we want to create and live in a world of justice and empowerment, where those sources and systemic barriers of injustice have been addressed - which means we all need to show up fully and with empathy and do our part now.

I’ll be joining a panel of women “who are pioneers in their respective fields, representing many facets of the Colorado tech industry as well as entrepreneurs,” for a short dialogue to help set-up audience breakout sessions to talk about how we can continue to raise each other up through even the toughest times.

Together let’s get creative in living in ways that enhance not only your own life and career, but to also create healthier, more equitable workplaces for us all.
